Frederick Gell

The Rt Rev Frederick Gell (24 September 1820 – 25 March 1902) was an eminent Anglican clergyman and Bishop of Madras 1861-1899.〔“Who was Who”1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 0-7136-3457-X〕
Gell was born in 1820,〔(British Empire web-site )〕 the son of Rev. Philip Gell, of Derby. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1843. Following graduation, he was appointed a Fellow at Christ's College, Cambridge,〔The Times, Monday, 15 May 1843; pg. 3; Issue 18296; col B ''University Intelligence. Cambridge, May 13''〕 and later that year ordained deacon.〔The Times, Wednesday, 6 December 1843; pg. 7; Issue 18472; col C ''Ordination Deacons of Cambridge''〕 Ordination as a priest followed the next year. In 1849 he was elected lecturer, and later dean and assistant tutor of the College.〔
His first ecclesiastical post was as a Curate at Great St Mary’s, Cambridge,〔(Church web-site )〕 and in 1858 he was appointed Cambridge preacher at the Chapel Royal, Whitehall. The following year he left Cambridge to become Domestic Chaplain to the Lord Bishop of London,〔"The Clergy List, Clerical Guide and Ecclesiastical Directory" London, Hamilton & Co 1889〕 and two years later, in 1861, he became the 4th Bishop of Madras.〔The Times, Monday, 1 July 1861; pg. 6; Issue 23973; col E ''Consecration Of The Bishop Of Madras''〕 He held the office for over a quarter of a century, until he resigned from ill-health in 1899.
